Their "confidence" is just the chest-thumping of nervous nellies trying to be big and scary. Today it was decided that women are not capable of making such decisions like deciding on whether or not they want children. The Supreme Court today placed a Federal Ban on late term abortions. And stop with the "partial-birth" abortion bullshit-late term abortions are performed if a woman's life is in danger or if a fetal health situation arises. The bottom line is if a woman could not go through the labor/delivery process of childbirth because it would be dangerous to her, late term abortion would be performed. But that is not an option anymore; rather, a woman can die before an abortion will be performed.

So the anti-choice, anti-women establishment has spoken; if a woman is not able to be constant baby-cozy, than she might as well be dead.

This analysis of the Duke Lacrosse Rape at Feministing is right on the money-these privileged white boys have had a taste of what it means to be black today.

No one knows what happened that night. The possibility that some type of physical/emotional abuse, assault, humiliation, degradation or the like occurred is likely, given the variables. However, it is possible that nothing happened, and as our justice system works the case was dropped because of no supporting or conclusive evidence. Misogynistic, racist, homophobic behavior does not always leave DNA evidence, so where does that leave us?

This case will set the precedent for future sexual assaults. And even though this case was an anomaly, it will forever be held up as a reminder to all women who think they have the right to seek justice after they have been gang-raped and they will think twice about reporting, and the pro-rape culture in our society will go on and on.

For the uninitiated, the Pussycat Dolls are a female singing group whose six members slither through their music videos dressed like Barbie’s nasty cousins. In their best known song they ask the musical question: “Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?”

McG, the music producer and film director who is an executive producer of “Pussycat Dolls Present" says:

"The Dolls are simply making a heartfelt inquiry: “It’s just like saying, ‘Don’t you wish your girlfriend could be free and comfortable in her own skin and do her own thing, like me?’ ”

And when the question of whether or not this might be a step backwards for women, Robin Antin, founder of the dolls, became defensive, invoking female role models who follow the Dolls by saying:

The first go to blog that I read is Pandagon. I will even go so far as to admit that I sometimes skip over posts to read Amanda's, but I swear I come back and read the others.
Amanda's insight, wit, intelligence and humour are unmatched in the blogesphere and it is not surprising that she was asked to work on the John Edwards presidential campaign as a commentator.

However, a certain group has taken quite an interest in Amanda's new employment. It seems as though because Amanda can be salty in her prose, the right-wing movement has gone completely apeshit. These folks are all up in arms because of Pandagon's frequent use of the word fuck. Additionally, because Amanda wrote this:

[...] For awhile, I had to listen to how the poor dear lacrosse players at Duke are being persecuted just because they held someone down and fucked her against her will--not rape, of course, because the charges have been thrown out. Can’t a few white boys sexually assault a black woman anymore without people getting all wound up about it? So unfair,” [...]

....she has been raked over the fucking coals. This debacle has been going on for days and it was started by William Donohue-President of the Catholic League. Keep in mind this is the same William Donohue who has said such charming things as:

"The gay community has yet to apologize to straight people for all the damage that they have done." [MSNBC's Scarborough Country, 4/11/05]

and

Addressing former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) in a press release, Donohue said: "[W]hy didn't you just smack the clergyman in the face? After all, most 15-year-old teenage boys wouldn't allow themselves to be molested. So why did you?" [10/4/06]

and who could forget:

Charlotte Allen, whom I'll just call Char-explained to me via the Weekly Standard in an article titled Duke's Tenured Vigilantes that rape is really just a theory, after all.

Lets start with the scare quotes shall we? I simply love how Char frames the “lacrosse rape case” at Duke University as though sexual assault is so silly and should be mocked by her.

The entire article is chock-full of the usual bullshit putting the blame on the victim, blah, blah, blah. Referring to victim as the accuser or mentioning over and over that the victim was a stripper/exotic dancer/escort and all that sort of BS that rape apologists love to harp on.

Here are a few tidbits:

Her [the victim] descriptions of her assailants' appearances also changed on December 21, apparently so as to accommodate the lanky, six-foot-three Finnerty; she had earlier described all three as chubby or heavyset and of medium height.

I can presume that if a woman is being gang-raped it would be highly likely that being able to recall the physical appearance of the assailants would be difficult at best.

Finally, she [the victim] moved the time of the alleged assault a half-hour backwards, to around 11:30 on the night of March 13, which could get around Seligmann's airtight alibi of cell-phone, taxicab, and ATM records indicating he had left the house before the midnight hour at which she had previously maintained that the gang rape occurred.

ATM records do not mean shit. Please, isn't it possible a buddy may have used his card?

Indeed, there had been two racial epithets let loose that night, as the accuser and Roberts left the party after dancing for only a few minutes (according to Roberts) because the accuser, paid $400 in advance, declined to perform, whether because she was insulted by crude remarks made by the partygoers, because she was too drunk to dance when she got there, or because she had combined alcohol with a prescription muscle relaxant she had taken earlier in the day.

Translation=She was paid money for a service she did not provide, drunk and an addict so she deserved it.

As the two women departed, one lacrosse player shouted the n-word at Roberts and another yelled, "Hey, bitch, thank your grandpa for my nice cotton shirt!"--a riff on a Chris Rock routine that the shouter undoubtedly thought was funny. Everyone would agree that both remarks were unacceptable, but there is no evidence that either Finnerty or Evans made either of them, and Seligmann was already elsewhere, as electronic records showed.

What? Chris Rock calls women bitches all the time. Remember these are nice young boys getting cash at ATM's to pay for strippers whom they call the n-word and bitch.

Mike Nifong's handling of the case was clearly outrageous. But he would probably not have gone so far, indeed would not have dared to go so far, had he not been egged on by two other groups that rushed just as quickly to judge the three accused young men guilty of gross and racially motivated carnal violence.

Char can't even bring herself to use appropriate terms like rape or sexual assault. She chooses carnal violence.

Despite the repeated attempts by the three to clear themselves, a substantial and vocal percentage--about one-fifth--of the Duke University arts and sciences faculty and nearly all of the mainstream print media in America quickly organized themselves into a hanging party. Throughout the spring of 2006 and indeed well into the late summer, Nifong had the nearly unanimous backing of this country's (and especially Duke's) intellectual elite as he explored his lurid theories of sexual predation and racist stonewalling.

That's right, the lefties are sitting around conspiring about kinky things like rape.

"They fed off each other [Duke University and the intellectual elite]" said Steven Baldwin, a Duke chemistry professor who finally broke his faculty colleagues' own wall of silence on October 24, publishing a letter in the Duke student newspaper, the Chronicle, denouncing his fellow professors for what he called their "shameful" treatment of Seligmann and Finnerty and rebuking the Duke administration for having "disowned its lacrosse-playing student athletes." In April, Duke president and English professor Richard Brodhead had abruptly suspended not only Seligmann and Finnerty but also the remainder of the Duke lacrosse season, plus a third player, Ryan McFadyen (also recently reinstated), who had nothing to do with the alleged assault but had made the mistake of sending an email to his teammates on the early morning of March 14 describing a plan to "kill" and "skin" some "strippers" in his dorm room (like the "cotton shirt" remark, this was another tasteless joke, parodying Bret Easton Ellis's novel American Psycho). That same day, April 5, Brodhead told the lacrosse team's coach, Michael Pressler, that he had until the end of the day to leave campus for good.

Kill and skin some strippers in his dorm room?? I have read American Psycho-and the guy is a sadistic rapist lunatic and the connection is a little too close for comfort. Not to mention the fact that there is something very wrong with a person who shoots friends e-mails with topics such as killing and skinning strippers.

The remainder of the article bashes the administration of Duke University for any action they may have taken against the accused. Also implying that the Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong is full of shit, and should be charged himself for even thinking of charging such nice young privileged white college boys with rape. Imagine! A district attorney charging the men who committed rape with rape. That is INSANE!!

Char at one point writes:

[...] but why would these "macho and entitled" young athletes who could have any Duke "lacrosstitute" of their choice free of charge, or, given their parents' money, pay for a real prostitute if they wanted to, bother with rape?

Whoops, someone forgot to do their research; rape is not about sex, it is about violence, power, control and dominance. Come on Char.

Anyway, I will be writing till the end of time with all of the myths that Char reinforces, not to mention the long tedious nature of this article. But this much is true-men rape women far more than women make false accusations and even Char states, Means and opportunity were presumably there that night [...] so it does not take fucking brain surgeon to put together what happened that night and realize that when it walks like a duck.......

So it's now fun for college students to play dress-up in gang-like attire and throw“ghetto” parties. It seems especially touching that this took place on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Authorities at Tarleton State University said they plan to investigate a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that mocked black stereotypes by featuring fried chicken, malt liquor and faux gang apparel. “I feel like there is no excuse for this type of ignorance,” said Donald Ray Elder, president of the Stephenville school’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Photographs posted on social networking Web site Facebook.com showed partygoers wearing Afro wigs and fake gold and silver teeth. One photo showed students “mocking how African-Americans do step shows,” Elder said. In another picture, a student is dressed as Aunt Jemima and carries a gun. “That upsets me,” Elder said. “That’s someone who knows nothing about Dr. King, because Dr. King was totally about nonviolence.”

But this does bring up some other issues that I have casually mentioned to a variety of people; racism is becoming popular. This is due mainly because of the entire Middle Eastern-Arab-Muslim-Islamic-and for that matter any dark skinned person connection that they would have to terrorism- that Bush and buddies have been feeding you.

This constant harping of it's us vs. them to could very well be translated into a misguided attempt at justifying this kind of behavior by an average college student by saying: “Look it's not like we're calling people names or outwardly discriminating-we're just having harmless fun making fun of black people by picking stereotypes of blacks and then dressing up like them. And besides-look how the government took care of the people effected by Katrina-and because Fox news tells me that all Arabs are terrorists-and a lot of people don't want Mexicans-whoops, I mean illegal immigrants- to live or have rights in the US-and whites are privileged and any other minorities do not need to be treated with any dignity or respect.” Or something like that.

If the pro-life movement said, “Look, we want to lower the number of abortions, but by doing that we have to find ways of preventing pregnancy in the first place-and this would not be limited to abstinence only education-preventing pregnancy would mean access to birth control, emergency contraceptives, comprehensive sexual education and abstinence education” I would respect their position.

But no- this movement would rather place consequences upon you for having sex outside of marriage-you get to have a “baby.” After you have the “baby” you are free to fuck off, cuz we want no part of you, and that includes your illegitimate bastard of a child.

I am pro-choice because “being pro-choice” is not just about abortion, it is about women deciding when and if she is going to have children. I am pro-choice because I believe in birth control. Look, I'm no brain-child but let's face it, Funk's article implied that if a woman goes to a bar and drinks she has put herself at risk-so if she is raped-the first thing that will be said is that she was at a nightclub drinking. Thus, if she wasn't drinking she would not have been raped and see how nicely the responsibility falls upon the woman. Theoretically, a woman should be able to walk down the street stark naked without the threat or risk of being raped.

I think it is safe to say a wall has been hit here in terms of what women can do to "protect" themselves. The focus needs to be on the perpetrator, not the victim. It is like blaming children for being abused or molested. If children were not playing in the backyard or playground flaunting their child-like tendencies they would not be molested.

Well, it finally happened. I knew it was coming but I was in denial. At my place of employment, it was brought to my attention that the content of what I listen to on my radio, at my cubicle (at an extremely low level, by the way) is making people uncomfortable. What do I listen to, you ask? Air America. That's right, Air America.

Keep in mind, won't you, that every person in this particular office listens to an ipod/radio at their cubicle, mostly to music. So, the “liberal talk” that I listen to can be heard when individuals get water from the cooler which just happens to be right next to my desk. No, I am not kidding, they are putting water into a cup and being assaulted by the likes of Al Franken.

So, now I wear headphones which is actually turning out to be a sweet deal because basically I can tune out every mindless conversation that I would normally overhear and cringe at. I realize this is total bullshit and these freaky conservative types are getting their way and trying to block the information and news that I want to receive, but like I said, the headphone deal is working out really good. Additionally, it is important for me to remember that this job is not permanent and it is totally flexible with my school schedule. I did, of course take it upon myself to inform the office manager the actual labor laws of California. I even gave her a copy of the language of this which clearly outlines the law and the problematic scenario that they have created by singling me out for my political beliefs:

Wow, I had no idea that women are directly putting themselves at risk for sexual assault by going to bars and drinking!!

Based on this theory, if women just stay at home where they belong, they would not get raped. Yeaaa!!!

Women's e-news has the balls to put an article up their website titled "Underage Women Sidle Up to Barroom Risks" by Liz Funk.

The article starts by discussing the fascinating details involved in club promoting such as:

Clubs use Web sites like ClimaxVIP.com and ClubPlanet.com to display pictures of attractive patrons. Often they are female, underage, scantily clad and striking erotic poses. These sites also point readers to the "hottest parties" at popular clubs and offer tips on how to try and get in.

The article is chock-full of this drivel all of which is totally irrelevant to the underlying theme of the article; women who go to bars and drink are at risk for getting raped. Period.

Pandagon has a great post about this dumb-ass article and I followed her lead and wrote to the editors at Women's e-news this:

As a reader of Women's e-news I have to say that I am deeply troubled by the Liz Funk article "Underage Women Sidle Up to Barroom Risks."
The message and implication of the article was; women who go to bars and drink alcohol are putting themselves at risk for rape, period.
I am astounded that a feminist website would be so irresponsible by reinforcing these rape myths.
I am a volunteer sexual abuse crises counselor, and I can not tell you how many times women have been assaulted and blame themselves because they were at a bar drinking and felt that they were somehow responsible. Additionally, because fear of being blamed is common, the decision for a victim to report a sexual assault becomes more difficult. Ms. Funk's article only will confirm these fears by erroneously placing the fault onto to the victim.
The “blame the victim” rhetoric is over; efforts need to be made for men (especially young boys) in creating a more positive attitude towards women. This is a very difficult task, however, reinforcing rape myths and posting them on a website for women to read sets back the sexual assault movement decades.
You have done a disservice to women and I hope that action is taken on your part to repair this.

Biting Beaver put up a post last month about how she had stopped taking birth control pills 'cuz of side effects and had problems with other forms of contraception (not that this all matters) but she had sex and the condom broke. The next morning she woke up to contact a doctor about emergency contraception and found out for herself that the decision making of her own reproductive rights were out of her hands.

When Beaver posted her blog about trying to find EC, the comments that were sent to her from the anti-abortion crew were horrifying....

Stupid whore. You spread your legs and now you want to murder a baby. I hope you get raped and murdered. Maybe then you'll feel what that innocent life felt.

Nice. Anyway, because Beaver could not her hands on EC she is pregnant. She has two kids already and does not want another child. So now, she is having an abortion. By not providing Beaver with EC the doctors/nurses moral crusade to “save innocent lives” has backfired and a woman has to go through an abortion that could have been prevented.

The real bottom line here is the fact that the fundie's not only want to control the female body, but if a dirty-little-slut-girl is going to have sex out of wedlock she must be punished with pregnancy, and since they are making safe abortion more and more difficult, the dirty-little-slut-girl is going the be punished with babies. And to even make the punishment more severe, the dirty-little-slut-girl will stuggle in finding child care or affordable health care or a decent salary or assistance with college tuition, etc.

The conservative right fundies do not give a flying fuck about children, remember they love the fetus; but hate the child.

Last Week John McCain spoke out for a second against Bush's torture policy and it appeared ever so briefly, that the Republican party may have a heart.

Well they don't. And I hope McCain is happy now that he made a deal with the devil and gave Bush his balls on a silver platter.

So here we are, Bush now can interpret the Geneva Convention as he sees fit, he may use "alternative techniques" for getting information form detainees and the kicker is that the bill passed will not hold previous military personnel, CIA interrogators and high ranking officers (ie. Bush, Rumsfeld etc.) accountable for any previous torture (Abu Ghraib, Gitmo) and therefore will not be charged with war crimes after this is all said and done.

At this point I guess the bill has not passed (I am not sure how this works, exactly) but I think it is in the stage where it needs to go to congress so they can vote on this. I encourage writing a letter to your congressperson, representative or whomever allowing the public to be able to vote on this bill in November. From what I have heard and read, it seems as though alot of people do not support this at all. This is serious shit and I do not trust that Congress will do the right thing and stand up the President and not allow this bill to pass (just like McCain was persuaded to sell out, congress can do the same thing.)

This is giving waaaayyyy to much power and control to one person.

So it seems as though Bush would like to act outside the parameters of Article III of the Geneva Convention. These documents prohibit nations engaged in combat to participate in such things as......

“violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture” and “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment.”

The chilling part of all of this is that the fucking President of the United States, Commander and Chief, leader of the free world needs someone else to define for him what human dignity is. He asks....

“And that Common Article 3 says that, you know, There will be no outrages upon human dignity. It's like - it's very vague. What does that mean, outrages upon human dignity ? That's a statement that is wide open to interpretation”

Okay, lets summarize, Bush wants Congress to draft legislation that will “clarify” what torture is..Not only does he want to continue torturing detainees, he wants to cover his ass for the past torture at Abu Ghraib because...well....there are pictures.

The ABC "Path to 9/11" movie was chock-full of melodramatic moments, high drama triteness, and a never ending marathon of close-ups, shaky camera manuevers and loud Arabic music.

But people did not tune in because of the cinematography; then tuned in because they wanted to see what propaganda looks like. However if you did watch, it was truly dumbed down and for good reason. Americans are dumb, and for the most part will have absolutely no idea of the politics that the US and Middle East have been embroiled in over the years. Honestly, I hardly think that anyone switching channels between Monday Night Football and The Path to 9/11, would even notice all the crap that never actually happened.

I will say that my favorite part was not in the movie, but when Gorgie Porgie came on after and gave his generic-stock speech with the all to familiar catch-phrases such as .....we must never forget what happened on 9/11..... we are fighting the war on terror....these people want to harm Americans.....blah blah blah. As I watched him, I became enthralled with what a simpleton he is and how he totally reminded me of those old sci-fi movies and how they have the leader of a planet called Zerpat and the fearless leader named Mozmo would use the TV to speak to the people on Earth, and his head would come onto the TV screen and he would be wearing futuristic type of clothing with a triangle printed on the front, and his initial M in the middle of the triangle, and he would never blink and in a robotic voice say, "People of Earth, my name is Mozmo, I am the leader of Planet Zerpat.” Do you know what I am talking about? Well anyway, Bush's bag of bullshit always reminds of these movies.

Not only are young women under the age of 18 required to get their parents permission for an abortion in Texas, but they must have their parents signature notarized.
Joe Pojman, executive director of Texas Alliance for Life which strongly opposes abortion, says.

"I believe we will see a drop in abortions and pregnancies for girls 17 years and younger."

This is so upsetting to me. How many young girls are verbally/physically abused by one or both parents. If a 15 year old girl is pregnant and can not go to her parents because she is fearful of them, what do you think she will do? She either faces her parents and hopes she does not get the shit beat out of her, or she does whatever she can to get an abortion, even if it means getting a back alley abortion.

No one should have to make a decision like that especially a young girl. And what I can not understand is how a young girl in a situation like this would be better off having a child?

So while Texas thinks that creating yet another deterrent for women to go through will decrease abortion rates, that only means that unsafe, unsanitary, dangerous back alley abortions will rise. But that's okay, cuz at least babies are being born.

You can only wishfully think what it would be like if abortion had been legal 30-50 years earlier; a lot less of these freaks.

Today, Plan B contraceptive was approved for over the counter sales to women 18 and over without a prescription. Women under 18 need to have a prescription to buy Plan B..

This decision was made after 3 years of stalling on the part of high ranking FDA officials.

-Thousands of families are still waiting for FEMA trailers.
-An estimated 11 percent of the $19 billion that has been spent by FEMA –or $2 billion – has been waste, fraud and abuse.
-80 percent of Gulf Coast businesses with approved SBA disaster loans are still waiting to get their loans.
-The Republican Congress didn’t enact needed housing money for homeowners in Louisiana until June, 10 months after Katrina – and the money has still failed to reach these homeowners.
-Only three of the 10 acute-care hospitals in New Orleans have re-opened; the only public hospital, Charity, has still not re-opened.
-Only 56 of 128 public schools in New Orleans are enrolling students this fall.

And..as though that is not bad enough...

The emergency housing trailers for Hurricane Katrina victims contain hazardous levels of formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Tests reveal that 94 percent of trailers tested had indoor levels of formaldehyde in excess of EPA safety standards.

Why is no one held accountable for this?? I can not BELEIVE that no one has to answer for this!! I am pissed off.

I Heart Terrorists

So today my brother apologized to me because of the argument we got into when he suggested that since I am a liberal - I probably sympathize with terrorists. Since he apologized I will not be writing about that ordeal, but since I loved the title I was going to use “I Heart Terrorists" I decided I would use it for the title of this post.

As promised, here is the story on the Oklahoma Republican Senator Tom Coburn. Perusing the AHF website I came across an article that back in February 2006 the above named Senator and Michael Weinstein were in Washington putting on a press conference introducing a bill reauthorizing the Ryan White Care funds. Okay...so that is not that big of a deal (although when it comes to this guy I would read the fine print.) But what bothered me was why was this conservative, Republican, right-winger so involved with these HIV issues. I mean look at this guys history...he basically disparages condom use, is opposed to abortion, and thinks doctors who perform abortions should be given the death penalty, promotes the abstinence until marriage crap, and the cherry atop all this is he introduced to Congress the HIV Prevention Act of 1997, which one of the situations would be HIV testing would be mandated or available on request and that all results of HIV tests be made available to state officials. Oh, he is also fiercely opposed to homosexuality and up until 1994 served as deacon in the Southern Baptist Church and Bush appointed him as the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS. One last article here from The Body really sums up this guy.
